Club History
West End were formed in 1964 by a group of local football enthusiasts who met in a local public house called ‘The Wellington’ and decided to form a new local football club. That chance meeting saw the birth of the club, with its name originating from the fact it was born geographically in the West End of Swansea.
West End made a great impression in their first ever season in the Swansea Senior League because their first football kit was a set of Welsh International Jerseys, donated by Trevor Ford. Trevor lived on Merlin Crescent in Townhill and had played 411 games, scoring 206 goals for Swansea Town, Aston Villa, Sunderland, Cardiff City, PSV & Newport County by his retirement in 1961. He also gained Welsh legendary status scoring 23 goals in 38 games for Wales.
Initially, the club started off by running two senior teams in the league. The club rose through the Swansea Senior League, with five consecutive promotions from 1964-65 to 1968-69, going from Division 6 to Division 1, including winning Divisions 5, 4 & 2. In 1970-71 West End won Division 1 of the Swansea Senior League, a feat they would repeat on another 12 occasions, while also finishing runners up 10 times before joining the Welsh League in 2005-06.
During this time West End also won the FAW Amateur Trophy two years in succession, defeating Rhydymwyn (3-1) in 2005 and Cefn United (4-2) in 2006. They also won the West Wales Amateur Cup in 1969 & 1975 and its successor, the Intermediate Cup, in 1978, 1983, 1994, 1998 & 2002. The club also won a further 30 cups, including the Swansea Senior and Open Cups, between 1964 & 2005.
Promotion was gained in the clubs first season in Welsh League Division 3, winning the championship with 25 wins out of 34 games, just failing by 2 goals to score 100 in the league. The following two seasons saw West End finish in 5th and 4th place in Division 2, before the championship was brought back to Pryderi Park in 2008-09, West End this time scoring 102 league goals.
The following three seasons would see the club consolidate with 11th, 7th and 11th place finishes, before 2012-13 would be the clubs most successful in their history. West End would win Welsh League Division 1, with 18 wins out of 28 league games to clinch the title ahead of Cambrian & Clydach Vale BGC, with the likes of Ross Jones and Sam Roden in the side, who both went on to play Welsh Premier Football.
The following season saw a succession of players leave for rival clubs and West End were disappointingly relegated back to Welsh League Division 2, where they would spend the next four seasons, until further relegation at the end of 2018-19. They now take their place in the Ardal Southern League, South West Division, ground sharing with Ynysygerwn at Llandarcy Academy of Sport.
Alan Beer and Jazz Richards both played for West End before joining Swansea City. Alan played 15 games at the Vetch before turning out 115 times for Exeter City. While Jazz went on to play 39 games for Swansea, before joining Crystal Palace, Huddersfield, Fulham & Cardiff City. He also played 14 times for Wales including making an appearance at Euro 2016 against Slovakia.
