Evans & Williams

Evans & Williams Football Club originated in the late 1950’s after some of the workers from the Evans & Williams Wagon Works decided to form a football team. They began by playing several friendly matches, before deciding to join the Carmarthenshire League. The team was soon given the nickname ‘Albies’ after the owner of the works, Albie Evans supported the club in its formative years.

The first competitive fixture was Saturday 20th August 1960, a 4-2 win over Trostre Sports in the Second Division of the Carmarthenshire League. In 1962-63 the club won promotion to the First Division and finished their first season in the top division in 4th place. In 1964 the club formed a reserve team who started with a 13-0 win over Llanelly Steel, while 1965 saw the club become the first Carmarthenshire League side to tour overseas, visiting Belgium, France & Holland.

In the Welsh Amateur Cup, the club enjoyed two glorious campaigns, defeating Welsh League side Gwynfi Welfare in 1967 & 1968, before losing to Bridgend Town and Cardiff Institute of Higher Education.

The end of the 60’s saw the club fluctuate between the top two divisions in the Carmarthenshire League, however the early 70’s brought success again. The Challenge Cup was won in 1972, Seaside defeated 2-0, for Albies to lift their first major cup. Promotion was gained to the Premier Division in 1973 and reached the 1974 Star Cup Final, losing to PSF.

The end of the 70’s brought relegation two seasons in succession and despite promotion in 1982, the rest of the 80’s saw the club in the doldrums, with relegation on two occasions to end in the bottom rung of Carmarthenshire League Football.

However, the 90’s were to see the club rise again, with the Third Division Championship won in 1992-93, under the management of Gareth ‘Jinks’ Jenkins. Anthony ‘Yash’ Rees and Fred Smith then took the club on with runners up spot achieved in the Second Division in 1994-95 and with Yash now in sole charge the First Division Championship was won in 1998-99, to reach the Premier Division.

The turn of the Millennium saw Albies go onto firmly establish themselves in the Premier Division and achieve cup success in the Senior Cup, the T.G. Davies Cup and Star Cup. The club’s greatest achievement though came in 2014-15 when they won the Carmarthenshire League Premier Division for the only time in the club’s history. Needing to win their last 11 fixtures, the club scored 59 goals, with Neil Williams, becoming the only manager to achieve this feat.

Evans & Williams finished 2023-24 as runners up in the West Wales Premier League to achieve promotion to the Ardal Southern, where they have finished in 7th and 4th place over the last two seasons. The club currently has three Senior Teams, a Youth Team and sixteen Junior and Mini Teams from U6’s to U16s. They also have Walking Football and a Ladies Veterans Team, with over 400 players registered to play for the club.
