Club History
South Gower AFC finds its roots in the Reynoldston Football Club which existed in an informal manner before the Second World War. With the amalgamation of Port Eynon District Cricket Club and the Football Club after the war in 1945 South Gower Sports Club was born. The site that we now know as South Gower Sports Club came up for sale in 1951 and within two years the site was transformed from a U.S. Army Camp to Sports Fields for the use by the community. The Pavilion was opened in 1960, with the Clubhouse in 1984. Early teams played in Swansea Thursday League. When the ground opened in 1953 the team played in the Swansea Senior League Division 4.
More recently, South Gower were relegated from Swansea Senior League Division 1 in the 2002-2003 season after a number of successful seasons in the top-flight, under the management of Malcolm Phillips. After two seasons Malcolm left the club and Peter Honey-Jones was appointed First Team Manager. In his first season 2005-2006, the club were promoted back to Division 1 and lost in the West Wales Intermediate Cup Final.
In 2008-2009 South Gower AFC applied for Welsh League status. A number of improvements were made on and off the field to bring the ground and facilities up to standard. Amazing work by Peter Honey-Jones and a dedicated committee enabled the club to meet criteria and it was down to the players on the pitch to try and make this dream a reality. The 2008-2009 season saw the club gain this feat by finishing second in the league, also winning the West Wales Intermediate Cup, beating Bonnymaen 1-0.
Two seasons were spent in the Welsh League before Welsh League restructuring meant that a normally respectable 15th place finished in the second season saw 6 teams relegated, South Gower being one of the clubs falling to the League changes and bringing to an end the most successful period in the history of South Gower to date.
With Peter-Honey Jones leaving mid-way through the 2010-2011 season due to ill health, club stalwarts Gareth Coleman and Steve Lancey tried to steady the ship and keep the team together. Notable player exits and retirements left South Gower in a period of re-building and trying to lay new foundations for the future.
With the club now stabilised again and progressing in the right direction, the 2013-2014 season saw former player Sean Harris re-join the club and join the coaching team. With Sean Harris, Gareth Coleman and Steve Lancey the club looked to have renewed hope and started to perform on the pitch again.
In 2019-2020 Adrian Giardelli was asked to join the club, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the club. Players from further afield were being attracted to the club and a broader scouting network had been introduced. With the club getting back to where it should be Gareth Coleman stood down from the Mangers role leaving Sean and Adrian to take over and guide the club back to its former glories.
In 2021-2022 South Gower AFC entered the newly formed West Wales Premier League and finished 4th in the first season with a very young and talented squad. South Gower then finished as Runners-Up in 2022-23 to clinch promotion to the Ardal Southern. The last two seasons has seen great work from Adrian Giardelli, Sean Harris and Ben Leahy with the club finishing in 7th and 10th positions respectively in the Ardal Southern and reach the last 16 of the Welsh Cup in 2023-24, losing narrowly 2-1 at Flint Mountain.
