Club History
Ynyshir Albions were formed in 1992, in a village in the Rhondda Valley, that took its name from a farm in the area that fell within the historic parishes of Ystradfodwg and Llanwynno. In 1845 the first deep mine was sank in Ynyshir, by Shepherd & Evans to form the Ynyshir Colliery.
The club joined the South Wales Senior League, and the first success came in 1998-99, winning the Division 2 Championship, with 22 wins out of 30 games, scoring 122 league goals. The following season, Ynyshir, nicknamed the Buns, came runners up to Bettws, another 117 league goals plundered.
The following two seasons Ynyshir came 5th and 11th in Division 1, before winning Division 1 of the South Wales Senior League in 2002-03, winning 20 and drawing 2 out of 26 league games. They also came close to more success the following two seasons but had to settle for runners up spots on both occasions.
2005-06 saw the club struggle, with relegation from Division 1 and the following season brought a lowly finish of 11th out of 15 teams. However, the club would bounce back in style in 2007-08 winning Division 2 with 97 league goals on goal difference. Back in Division 1 though wasn’t a happy return, with the club relegated in last place, only winning 3 league games, and conceding 123 goals.
The next two seasons saw respectable finishes of 5th and 4th for the Buns, before 2011-12 was another successful season, promotion gained in runners up spot to Fochriw, only 2 league games lost, and 106 goals scored. Relegation was to strike again though within two seasons and a return to Division 2 for 2014-15, the last season of the South Wales Senior League which brought a 7th place finish.
2015-16 was the start of the South Wales Alliance League, when the South Wales Senior League merged with the South Wales Amateur League. Ynyshir Albions were placed in Division Two and won the title that season, with 22 wins out of 28 league games, scoring 90 league goals. With promotion to Division 1, the Buns would win promotion again as runners up behind Cardiff Draconians in 2016-17.
With the Buns now in the Premier League, they finished runners up to Penydarren BGC at the end of 2017-18, but the following season would go one better to seal promotion to the Welsh Football League, winning 24 and drawing 3 of the 30 league games, scoring 92 goals and conceding less than a goal a game with 25.
With a restructuring of the pyramid system, Ynyshir Albions kicked off 2019-20 in Welsh League Division 2, finishing the season in 4th place on a points per game system as the pandemic halted the season early. They also reached Round 1 of the JD Welsh Cup after defeating Blaenrhondda (2-0) and Merthyr Saints (3-1) in the preliminary rounds, before losing 7-3 at Cymru South side, Cambrian & Clydach Vale BGC.
After obtaining a Tier 3 licence for 2020-21 and a ground sharing agreement to play at Ynys Park, the club was granted a place in the Ardal Southern League South West Division. But with the season canceled and work now complete at the Ynyshir Oval, Ynyshir Albions have returned for 2021-22 to their home ground.
