Garden Village 2022/23
Stafford Common
History
Garden Village was founded in 1922 and started playing football at Swansea League level before joining the Carmarthenshire League where the club had numerous successes, winning the Senior Cup in 1990, 1995, 1996 & 1997 and the Challenge Cup in 1989. On the league front Garden Village were unlucky during this period, finishing runners up in the Carmarthenshire League Premier Division in 1989-90, 1997-98 & 1998-99.
However, the runners up spot in 1998-99 enabled the club to contest the Welsh League Play-off against Neath League runners up Cwmamman United for a place in the Welsh League. The game was played at Llandarcy and in front of a large crowd, it was a tense affair and still goalless after 90 minutes. Garden Village found the extra energy in extra time though to win 3-0, thanks to goals from Ross Evans, Tim Button and Mike Johnson to proudly take their place in Welsh League Division 3, under the management of Bob Lloyd & his assistant Norman Ward.
The Welsh League debut season was to be memorable as the club secured promotion by finishing third in Division 3 behind Garw and Ely Rangers – one point ahead of fourth-placed AFC Llwydcoed, with 17 wins in 28 league games. The club also fared well in their first venture in the Welsh Cup, a run that saw them dispose of Pontyclun (3-0) and Ely Rangers (2-1) before being knocked out by the then Welsh Cup holders & League of Wales side Inter Cardiff (5-0) in the last 32.
The Second Division proved to be a much tougher test for Village, but they still managed to finish a creditable eighth in the first season at this level. The following season though the club managed to secure promotion winning the final game of the season at Chepstow Town, to became Division Two Champions, pipping Bettws and Briton Ferry Athletic to the title. Village had a short spell in the topflight though, unfortunately being relegated, finishing two points adrift of Ely Rangers.
Meanwhile in the Welsh Cup, the club again reached the last 32 in 2004-05 and 2008-09 seasons, defeating Briton Ferry Athletic (2-1) before losing to Barry Town (2-1) in 2004-05, while beating West End (3-2) and Risca United (2-0) in 2008-09, before losing to Bangor City (4-0). While in 2014-15, Bangor were again their nemesis, winning by a solitary goal as Village again reached the last 32, defeating AFC Porth (9-0) and Risca United (2-1) on route.
After several seasons in Division Two, the club never finished outside of the top 8 positions, before regaining Division One status when they finished third in season 2008/09, behind West End and Ely Rangers. They remained in top division for two seasons, but unfortunately a poor 2010-11 season saw Village relegated back into Division Two. Season 2013-14 saw a return to the First Division after finishing third, narrowly failing to win the title at Briton Ferry on the last day of the season.
The club then had another two seasons in the First Division before relegation in 2015-16, with Village then playing in Division Two, until the re-organisation in 2018-19, when the division was re-named Division One.
Following the formation of the Ardal Leagues, the club finished in eleventh position in the Ardal Southern South West for season 2021-22.
